The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Luke 2:11
Joy is something grander than happiness. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, and when we find joy, it's infused with comfort and wrapped in peace. It's an attitude of the heart and spirit, often synonymous with but not limited to following Christ Jesus and pursuing a Christian life.
At the time when Jesus was born, the life for shepherds was hard. Society looked down on them as lowlifes and scoundrels. They had little reason to be joyful. The angel brought the good news that would cause great joy: A Savior had been born! God’s way of saying that he identifies with the down and out, the outcasts of society, the undesirables. Whatever darkness they were facing was transformed into the most beautiful light they’d ever seen, as the angels of heaven joined in singing, “Glory to God in the highest"!
Perhaps on this Christmas Day you are finding it difficult to feel joy. Perhaps there is an empty chair at your table. Perhaps you’re thinking about a family member who has turned away from the Lord or is no longer a part of your life. There is still good news with great joy also for you even if there is a reason that may somehow want to cause you not to feel like celebrating.
Why? Because the Savior came to make things right. He came to heal the broken hearted, to bring light where there is darkness and joy in the midst of sadness!
Christmas is Jesus! Let's celebrate Jesus!
Lord, thank you for reminding me that you are the reason for the Season. You are the Lord that turns impossibilities to possibilities. You have the answers to every question. Amen
