Promises

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Gen 12:2

A promise is a commitment or declaration by someone to do or not to do. How do we react in life when a promise is broken? Perhaps a promised promotion, relationship, to make sure something is done by a certain time and then it’s not! This comes as a result of human imperfections?

It is so comforting to know that we can depend on our Sovereign God to keep His promises daily without fail. When He gave Abraham “the Promise” he meant every word as Abraham stepped out in faith and obedience. He totally relied on God to lead him one step at a time. He did not have a 5-year plan set out. Scripture confirms this as we read about Abraham’s life of faith and obedience. We know that there were disparities in Abraham’s life, all was not smooth sailing. There was unfamiliar ground. A couple of times he lied about Sara because of fear. He encountered what we might call unhealthy work relationship like the conflict he had with his brother Lot which called for patience on his part. The journey was long. When his eyes were not focused on God, he made mistakes and disobeyed. But he was still God’s friend. Just like we do when we loose our focus on God. But our God is loving, merciful and gracious as He extends forgiveness when we reach out to Him.

God was making Abraham famous, to bless earth families according to “the Promise”.

There are many promises God has given us, if we are believers in His Word that are so comforting. He reminds us that we are chosen, called, can never be abandoned, can never be alone, we can endure everything and many others.

God uses everything in life for a good purpose if we belong to Him (good things, bad things, everything). God has a different perspective than we do. Just like the promise in Romans 8:28 says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Thank you Lord for the wonderful promises you have made available for me in your Word. Help me to trust you and allow the Holy Spirit to guide me daily in obedience in my next steps and to stay within the walls of Romans 8:28. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Throughout This Day meditate on this verse of Promise: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
