For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17
Jericho was a strategic and powerful city but Israel could not get to the Promised Land when it was still standing. It was tightly guarded because the people inside were afraid. The two spies sent to this city found help from Rahab. In Psalm 20:7, the Bible reminds us this: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
During this move 40,000 armed strong men were ready to fight for Israel. But the Lord’s strategy was different as always! Close to Jericho city, Joshua saw a man standing in front of him with a sword, and Joshua asked him to identify himself. He simply said he was the Commander of the Lord’s army. That opened Joshua’s eyes to follow the instructions he was given. The strategy was to march around the city once a day for six days with priests blowing trumpets. This was serious worship time! On the seventh day, to march seven times and after one long blast on the ram’s horns, all the people to shout the loudest! The walls of Jericho will collapse in that moment. Perhaps the Jerichoans were wondering why these people were just marching aimlessly around a wall! Humanly speaking this didn’t make sense at all! Yet, such a great reminder! God tells us so many times to trust him with our issues because He is the only one who can handle but we sometimes frantically try to solve them in our own strength!
This battle was about worship and devotion to God, walking in God’s presence. The walk of faith in God caused the fall of Jericho. The Jerichoans preferred handling things their way, walking in darkness but only Rahab chose light and she and her family were spared because she had hidden the spies. If the spies remembered their promise to Rahab, how much more will God remember us when we walk in faith! We have this record to remind us now and many generations to come!
Right from the start, God promised Joshua that: “No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live.” Joshua 1:5 For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.” Joshua’s part was to walk in obedience. The success was because of the walk of obedience! What a faith testimony this is today?
Dear Lord, thank you for reminding me that when I’m facing my enemies, giants or difficulties in my life today no matter how challenging, you are already in control and I can totally depend on you. Help me to know that constructed walls can collapse through your power no matter how high they may appear. Amen.
Challenge: Jericho situations require Jericho victories, which require Jericho obedience. Follow God, even if the journey seems impossible or unexpected!
